Taipei and Beijing have engaged in vaccine diplomacy since the outbreak of COVID-19. Beijing, according to Prof.Andrew Yang, Secretary General of Chinese Council of Advanced Policy Studies, is using the vaccine as an important factor to consolidate its influence in the international community. As China is hindering Taiwan’s efforts to secure the injections, the US and Japan have donated million doses of vaccine to Taiwan.

In the meantime, during the 100th anniversary of the Chinese Communists Party, Chinese President Xi Jinping made a statement regarding the Taiwan issue and pledges reunification with Taiwan adding that no one should underestimate the Chinese people’s determination to defend national sovereignty. Prof.Andrew Yang said the message is not only directed at Taiwan but also to alert the US and other countries not to interfere with China’s “domestic issue”. (PRC has long regarded Taiwan as part of its territory)
