An exhibit focusing underwater cultural preservation is on display at a post office in the offshore island county of Penghu.

The multimedia exhibit centers on the underwater resources surrounding the archipelago. It is a path where the Kuroshio Current, known as the Black Tide, passes, and the waters there are rough with lots of submerged reefs.

A preliminary investigation has found that at least four boats have sunk there that carry cultural and historical significance, with over 70 targets already identified.

Culture ministry official Lin Hung-lung on Wednesday discussed the importance of underwater cultural preservation.

"We want to tell the public that we need to cherish our island, especially the history of the Taiwan Strait. These underwater cultural relics are like a time capsule which will be identified and interpreted one by one. These tell what happened in the Taiwan Strait and its historical background," said Lin.

It took the cultural ministry 11 years to set up an underwater archeological work station at the post office in Penghu, which is itself a building of historical significance.
