First indigenous drone ready for forestry, agricultural tasks
First indigenous drone in Taiwan

Taiwan has developed its first drone. The forestry bureau will use the drone to gather geographical information of mountainous and agricultural regions.

The new drone, presented on Monday, is called “Mountain Hawk-eagle”, after the largest raptor in Taiwan. Unlike many drones, which have propellers, this one has a fixed wing design. It is capable of flying for four consecutive hours and capturing high resolution photos and videos. Its long range allows it to fly deep into areas that are difficult for humans to reach and provide information that can help with land preservation and development.

GEOSAT Aerospace and Tech. is the company that developed the drone. It says that more and more countries in South and Southeast Asia are using Taiwan-made drones to help with forestry and agricultural tasks.

Those countries are targets of the New Southbound Policy, which is the Tsai administration’s initiative to build closer cultural and economic ties with those regions.
