Taipei Mayor Ko Wen-je set off Thursday to Japan. There, Ko plans to hold talks with local officials on tourism, energy policy, and Taipei’s plans to apply to host the 2030 Asian Games.

After his arrival in Tokyo, Ko is set to and meet with the city’s governor, Yuriko Koike, as well as Nobuo Kishi, member of the House of Councillors. Ko and his team have kept the topics he will discuss under wraps. Ko explained the decision, saying that there is no need to maintain a high profile.

After Tokyo, Ko will visit Fukushima and Miyagi Prefecture, areas that were affected by the 2011 Tohoku earthquake. Ko says both Taiwan and Japan face the challenges of natural disasters such as typhoons and earthquakes. He also says he’d like to learn from measures Japan uses to prevent and deal with such disasters.

Ko says he is also looking to find ways of attracting more Japanese tourists to Taiwan. A recent set of statistics has shown that the number of Taiwanese nationals visiting Japan each year is more than double the number Japanese visitors to Taiwan.
