Same-sex couples across Taiwan have begun to marry. That’s as a landmark bill legalizing same-sex marriage took effect Friday.
Some couples arrived early at household registration offices to be among the first to marry. The first same-sex marriage was registered at 8:00am Friday in the southern city of Tainan.
At 2:00pm, the interior ministry reported that the number of newlywed same-sex couples had reached 363.
While most of these marriages have taken place in New Taipei, Kaohsiung, Taipei, and Taichung, couples in less urban areas are also tying the knot. All but three of Taiwan’s 22 administrative divisions have reported same-sex couples registering to marry.
The interior ministry says it will continue to update its figures into the evening, when registration offices with later hours have closed for the day.
