President Tsai Ing-wen says she hopes the newly established Indo-Pacific Democratic Governance Consultations will become a regular platform for exchanges between Taiwan and the US.

Tsai was speaking Wednesday while meeting with US Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Scott Busby, who is in Taiwan to attend the new forum’s inaugural session. Tsai said she also hopes the consultations will give Taiwan an opportunity to share its achievements in the area of democratic governance with other regional partners.

During the meeting, Tsai also spoke about another event Busby is attending while in Taiwan- an international workshop on building public media literacy and combatting fake news. Tsai said that there is a greater need than ever before for democratic countries to join in the fight against fake news as techniques for spreading false information evolve.

Tsai said the workshop will help strengthen the ability of people around the world to detect fake news. She also said it will give Taiwanese experts an opportunity to discuss the fight against fake news with policymakers from around the world.
