It’s the season for gathering honey in Taiwan. However, this year, a group of bee farmers in Chiayi County are facing heavy financial losses because their bees have been fatally poisoned.

A group of bee farmers in Meishan Township, Chiayi County recently made a heartbreaking discovery. Some of their bees were barely moving, while others had died.

The farmers discovered that the bees in 314 bee boxes had been poisoned. It’s now honey gathering season, and this means the loss of an entire year’s work. That’s not to mention NT$2 million (US$64,500) in lost honey sales.

Police have gathered evidence at the scene and brought it to a local agricultural research center for examination in the lab. The police say they have already pinpointed possible suspects.
