Three five-star hotels in Taipei incurred fines for violating food safety standards. The Food and Drug Administration carried out spot checks at hotels all over Taiwan recently, with three of Taipei’s top institutions scoring less than perfect.

Five-star hotels are known for putting on extravagant banquets and serving elaborate dishes. However, several of these top-tier establishments in Taipei were recently found to be in violation of food safety standards.

The Food and Drug Administration conducted a series of spot checks at hotels all over Taiwan between May and July of this year. During their inspection they found expired ingredients in kitchens at the Grand Hotel Taipei, the Ambassador Hotel Taipei and the Regent Hotel.

Food and drug officials from Taipei City say that the expired ingredients were not stored separately from usable foodstuffs, as stipulated by law. Each of the three hotels have been slapped with a fine of NT$60,000 (US$1,990) for violating food safety regulations.

All three establishments say they have since addressed the issue by removing the ingredients in question from their kitchen. A public relations official from the Ambassador Hotel Taipei said they have hired extra staff to ensure that all ingredients in the kitchen are up to proper safety standards.
