Vice President Chen Chien-jen on Monday thanked the Pacific nation of Palau for speaking out on behalf of Taiwan on the international stage. Chen is in Palau for the 20th anniversary of diplomatic relations.

Chen called the anniversary an important milestone in ties. He said that Palau has become one of Taiwan’s most solid allies in the Pacific for the past 20 years. The vice president said Palau chose to establish diplomatic ties with Taiwan because the two sides share many things in common -- like Austronesian culture and a respect for democracy and freedom.

Chen spoke about the many areas in which Taiwan and Palau are cooperating: like medical care, agriculture, education and infrastructure. He said the results have brought about mutual benefits for both sides.
