Taiwan’s military has been stepping-up its game in preparation for the long Lunar New Year holiday. Taiwan’s most elite squadron of marines is ready for anything that could happen as the rest of Taiwan rests.
Step one, blow out the tires. Step two, set up a roadblock. Step three, surround and take-down. Step four, extract all hostages. Not this time, would be hijackers, because Taiwan’s most elite military squad is on the job. This is Taiwan’s Marine Corps Special Service Company.
What does it take to be part of the best-of-the-best? Chen Jian-hao, a captain in this prestigious unit, tells us that applicants must be able to run three kilometers in twelve minutes while in full gear. They must also be able to swim 200 meters in full-gear. He says that what would constitute a full score in any other unit is merely a benchmark in this one.
This marine company is standing guard as Taiwan takes off to celebrate the Lunar New Year. Among its preparations has been a drill simulating an enemy infiltration of Taiwan’s radar equipment. In a situation that dire, there’s only one group of soldiers you can count on. Leslie Liao, RTI News.
