President Tsai Ing-wen says Taiwan has sovereignty over the Diaoyutai Islands. Tsai was speaking Tuesday.

The Diaoyutai Islands in the East China Sea is claimed by Taiwan, China, and Japan. The islands are called the Senkaku Islands in Japanese.

Tsai’s comments came following a decision made by Ishigaki city in Okinawa prefecture to vote on a name change on June 22 from the Senkaku Islands to Tonoshiro Senkaku. The city’s mayor said the name change will help make its administrative affairs more effective.

Tsai said Taiwan insists on its sovereignty over the Diaoyutai Islands though it will try to maintain regional peace and security. She also said Taiwan’s stance on territorial disputes is “setting aside differences and joint development.”

Meanwhile, Taiwan’s representative to Japan, Frank Hsieh, Monday denied he has been weak on the matter. In a Facebook post on Monday, Hsieh said his office has already issued a strongly-worded statement.
