The foreign ministry says that the Vatican sent a congratulatory message to President Tsai Ing-wen Thursday to mark Taiwan’s upcoming National Day. Taiwan observes National Day on October 10.
In the message, the Vatican reportedly conveyed abundant divine blessings on the Taiwanese people.
The Vatican is Taiwan’s sole diplomatic ally in Europe. The foreign ministry says that the two sides maintain good diplomatic relations. The ministry says that notable areas of cooperation with the Vatican in recent years include work to tackle climate change and human trafficking, as well as work to ensure the welfare of migrant workers and refugees and promote public health.
The ministry says that Taiwanese civic groups and its Roman Catholics continue to take part in many joint projects with the Vatican, further enhancing relations.
