Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Joanne Ou says the government has told Tokyo about concerns over Japan’s handling of nuclear wastewater.
Ou was speaking Thursday, after environmental groups signed a petition urging the government to oppose Japan’s plan to dump nuclear wastewater into the ocean.
Ou said that while Japan has yet to make a final decision on the plan, Taiwan’s government takes the issue seriously, as it involves the marine environment, ecological conservation, and individual health.
Ou said the foreign ministry and the Atomic Energy Council have already expressed Taiwan’s concerns to Japan. Ou also said that Taiwan has asked Japan to notify it of its decision and explain how it would handle the wastewater based on a memorandum of understanding on nuclear energy information exchanges the two sides signed in 2014.
