Foreign Minister Joseph Wu says the government’s responsible and pragmatic foreign policy has paved the way for greater mutual trust with the United States.
Wu’s comments came Monday after US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said the United States will lift “self-imposed restrictions” on official contacts with Taiwan. The US State Department released a statement over the weekend saying that Washington will no longer “appease” China.
Foreign Minister Wu said that lifting the restrictions is significant for upgrading ties between the two sides. He said he would continue pushing for a pragmatic foreign policy to help strengthen the relationship.
As for an upcoming visit to Taiwan by US ambassador to the UN Kelly Craft, Wu said the trip is to discuss how to promote Taiwan’s bid to participate in international organizations.
Craft is scheduled to visit Taiwan on Wednesday. She will meet President Tsai Ing-wen on Thursday.
