US to continue supplying Taiwan with defensive weapons: Official

The foreign ministry says that the United States will continue supplying Taiwan with defensive weapons.

That’s after US media outlets reported that the Biden administration has put on hold arms sales to Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, both of which were approved by former US President Donald Trump.

On Thursday, Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Joanne Ou said that Taiwan is not affected by the suspension of these arms sales.

Ou said that the Biden administration has paid high attention to Taiwan’s national security and to cross-strait peace and stability since taking the helm. She quoted a press release issued by the US State Department last week that said that the United States’ commitment to Taiwan is “rock-solid.”

The Trump administration approved eleven arms sales packages for Taiwan, including F-16V fight jets and drones. The latest package was announced last December.
