US Representative Scott Perry has proposed a bill in Congress that would include Taiwan in the “NATO Plus” group of US allies. Currently, the “NATO Plus” group includes Japan, Australia, South Korea, Israel, and New Zealand.

The bill, called the “Taiwan PLUS Act”, states that defense cooperation with Taiwan is crucial to the national security of the US. It urges Taiwan’s inclusion in the “NATO Plus” group so that Taiwan can receive the same treatment as NATO members in terms of arms sales.

Taiwan’s foreign ministry said Tuesday that it will monitor the bill’s progress and stay in contact with the US government on the matter of Taiwan’s inclusion in the “NATO Plus” group.
