The foreign ministry says that Taiwan's relationship with its ally Honduras remains strong. Foreign ministry spokesperson Joanne Ou made these comments on Tuesday, as there is concern that Honduras may switch diplomatic ties to Beijing after Honduras holds its presidential election this coming Sunday.
The result of the election may determine whether Honduras continues to recognize Taiwan or cuts off its ties to establish diplomatic ties with China. Ou says that Taiwan is aware of the mounting pressure that Honduras is facing from China.
Taiwan currently only has 15 diplomatic allies, a number that has dwindled as China has tried to lure new allies away from Taiwan. Ou says it's very important for Taiwan to maintain its relations with Honduras, and it's committed to proving to Honduras that Taiwan is a trustworthy ally.
Ou says that Taiwan will respect the democratic process in Honduras. She says that Taiwan plans to keep cooperating with Honduras to further the development of both countries.
