Guatemala will “definitely” maintain foreign relations with Taiwan. That came from Guatemalan Foreign Minister Mario Bucano in an interview on Wednesday.
Guatemala is one of the 14 countries to maintain official diplomatic relations with Taiwan. Measured by GDP, it has the largest economy of all of Taiwan’s official partners.
Bucano says Guatemala’s relationship with the United States and Taiwan are “key.” He says Guatemala wants peace in the region, sovereignty for the Taiwanese people, and territorial integrity.
China has recently used its economic influence to court countries in the Americas to switch their official recognition to Beijing. That includes Panama in 2017, the Dominican Republic in 2018, and Nicaragua in 2021. Guatemalan President Alejandro Giammattei has hinted that China tried to do the same with offers of COVID vaccines.
But there are other exceptions. Earlier this year new Honduran President Xiomara Castro said she would maintain official ties with Taiwan.
