Incoming EU ambassador to China Jorge Toledo Albiñana says the EU doesn’t support Taiwanese independence. He adds Europe upholds peaceful unification between China and Taiwan.
In an interview published by Spanish newspaper La Vanguardia on Sunday, Toledo said the international community needs China for global governance. He said the EU doesn’t support Taiwanese independence, but rather “peaceful unification” with China. Toledo added that if China were to use force to take Taiwan, the EU would respond even more harshly than it has towards Russia after its invasion of Ukraine.
Foreign ministry spokesperson Joanne Ou on Tuesday defended the island’s sovereignty and its peace-loving democracy. She says Taiwan and China are unrelated, and that only the Taiwanese people can decide the country’s future.
Ou adds the EU and Taiwan are important trading partners and reaffirmed their shared belief in freedom, democracy, and the rule of law.
