A referendum to lower the voting age from 20 to 18 fell short of the threshold needed to pass. The amendment was voted on along with the local elections on Saturday.

The referendum would have had to pass with more than 9.65 million votes in favor of the amendment. However, only 5.53 million votes were cast backing the constitutional revision.

If the referendum had passed, it would grant voting rights to those aged 18 and over as well as the right for them to run for office, pending changes to existing laws for that to happen.
