A survey says over 70% of its respondents are willing to defend Taiwan if China tries to invade the country for the purpose of reunification. The Taiwan Foundation for Democracy (TFD) conducted the survey and released the poll results on Friday.

The survey highlighted the difference in people’s willingness to fight depending on the reason for China’s invasion. The results show that if China’s attack was instead in response to Taiwan declaring independence, then just over 63% of respondents would be willing to defend the country.

The TFD has commissioned National Chengchi University for the past four years to survey Taiwanese attitudes toward democracy and national defense. This year’s survey says over 73% of the respondents believe democracy may have its problems, but it is still the best system.

The poll also examined the public's views on the impact of disinformation. It showed over 90% of the respondents thought disinformation would be harmful to Taiwan’s development of democratic politics.

TFD conducted the survey from May 18 to May 23 with a sample of nearly 1,300 adults in Taiwan aged 20 or older.
