Premier Chen Chien-jen (陳建仁) says Taiwan will not experience electrical shortage following the decommissioning of the No. 2 generator at the second nuclear plant. The remark came on Tuesday, the day before the generator enters its decommissioning phase.
The government is retiring the generator because the operating permit reached its 40-year contract. Since assuming office, the DPP government has also been pushing to retire nuclear power by 2025 and replace it with renewable energy.
Chen says the Economic Ministry and Taipower have proper measures in place to ensure stable electricity supply. Economic Minister Wang Mei-hua (王美花) says she promises there will not be an electrical power shortage.
In response to concerns about rising electricity prices, Wang says price adjustments are pending further discussion among legislators. Wang says the changes will factor in people's livelihood and Taipower operations.
