Taiwan’s primary electricity provider Taiwan Power Company, or Taipower, is investing NT$500 billion (US$16.6 billion) in the next ten years to strengthen the transmission and distribution systems to prevent power outages.

Taipower’s acting chairperson Tzeng Wen-sheng (曾文生) says previous blackouts were due to unstable transmission grids. According to Tzeng, Taipower plans to decentralize the power grids to increase transmission stability and build safer electrical substations that complement local infrastructures.

Taipower also aims to adopt renewable energy as a sustainability measure. Tzeng says numerous companies have pledged to transition to 100 percent renewable energy in the near future. He notes that solar power has enabled Taipower to concentrate on generating electricity during peak hours at night, contributing to a more eco-friendly approach.

According to Tzeng’s calculations, Taiwan will have sufficient energy supply until 2030.
