Pope Francis recently met with Bishop Norbert Pu (浦英雄) of the Catholic Chiayi Diocese, who is Taiwan’s first Indigenous bishop. The meeting took place during Bishop Pu's visit to Rome, where he participated in a training course for new bishops held by the Dicastery for Evangelization.
During the meeting, Bishop Pu conveyed greetings from the Church in Taiwan. Taiwan’s embassy in Vatican City posted on Facebook on Wednesday that before leaving Rome, Pu made a special trip to visit the Five Loaves and Two Fishes Art Exhibition. The exhibition by Taiwanese artist Tseng Ying-tung (曾英棟) was used to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Pope Francis's inauguration this year. Pu expressed his appreciation for the use of Taiwanese contemporary art in the event.
The Holy See is one of Taiwan’s 13 remaining diplomatic allies.
Bishop Pu was appointed by Pope Francis as the bishop of the Chiayi Diocese in February last year. He is a member of Taiwan's Indigenous Tsou people in Alishan Township and has worked with several nuns and priests to translate missals and gospels into the Tsou language, as well as teach the Tsou native language in mountainous areas.
