Taiwan representative to the United Kingdom Kelly Hsieh (謝武樵) and U.K. representative in Taiwan John Dennis formally signed the Enhanced Trade Partnership Arrangement via video conference on Wednesday. The agreement will lay a foundation for further economic and trade partnerships.

Trade Representative John Deng (鄧振中) of the Cabinet’s Office of Trade Negotiations, says the structural agreement establishes the basis for future exchanges. He says immediate negotiations will begin for further agreements on three topics: digital trade, investment, and renewable energy.

Deng adds that although he can’t predict when negotiations on the three topics will be completed, he hopes the relationship can continue to grow between the two countries.

Deng says this is the first economic and trade-related agreement that Taiwan has signed with a European country. He says the U.K. will soon become a member of the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) and that improving trade relations with the U.K. will be helpful for Taiwan’s bid to join CPTPP.
