Taiwan's representative to the U.S. Hsiao Bi-khim (蕭美琴) has submitted her resignation to the Foreign Ministry and returned to Taiwan to run for vice president in the 2024 election. The Foreign Ministry stated on Tuesday that Taiwan-U.S. relations would not be affected. The Foreign Ministry is currently processing Hsiao's resignation in accordance with regulations.
The process is expected to be completed in a few days, and Foreign Minister Joseph Wu (吳釗燮) has approved Hsiao's request for leave during that time. The ministry says that Hsiao will remain the de facto ambassador until her resignation takes effect. The ministry adds that Taiwan-U.S. relations are very important and that there will be a smooth transition period.
