Local police on Thursday confirmed that a Taiwanese professor was among the three victims killed in Wednesday’s shooting on the campus of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV). Dr. Jerry Cha-Jan Chang (張家禎) had been a professor in the Department of Management at the university’s Lee Business School since 2014.
All three of the dead were faculty members, as was the fourth wounded victim. Business professor Patricia Navarro-Velez is the second named victim, while the name of the third victim has yet to be released. According to the Associated Press, the shooter himself was a former business professor who had applied for several jobs around Las Vegas universities, including UNLV but was denied each time.
In a statement on Friday, the Taiwan Foreign Ministry said that the representative office in San Francisco, whose responsibility includes the states of Nevada and Utah, has immediately expressed condolences to the school and the victims’ families. They add that they would provide any necessary assistance at the family’s request.
