In response to Former President Ma Ying-jeou (馬英九) visiting China, Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) Minister Chiu Tai-san (邱太三) said during a legislative hearing on Monday, that as long as there is communication and exchange between the two sides of the Taiwan Strait, it is a good thing.
As for whether Ma will meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping (習近平), Chiu says the government is closely monitoring the situation and will express its stance if necessary. Chiu emphasized that cross-strait communication is a positive development.
Regarding concerns that Ma may make statements that undermine Taiwan's sovereignty, Chiu said that he cannot comment on Ma’s actions as this is a personal trip. Chiu stated that the government hopes all Taiwanese visiting China for tourism or cultural exchanges can return safely.
The MAC Minister also addressed comments made by Legislative Speaker Han Kuo-yu (韓國瑜) in a recent Facebook post mentioning the "Taiwan region". Chiu stated that politicians and the public often use imprecise terminology and people shouldn’t worry about them too much.
