President-elect Lai Ching-te (賴清德) announced that former Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Chairman Cho Jung-tai (卓榮泰) has been appointed as Taiwan’s new premier during a press conference on Wednesday.
At the event, it was also revealed that former Culture Minister Cheng Li-chiun (鄭麗君) will be taking up the position of vice premier. National Development Council (NDC) Minister Kung Ming-hsin (龔明鑫) will serve as the Cabinet’s Secretary-General and Lai's presidential campaign spokesperson Chen Shih-kai (陳世凱) will become the Cabinet’s spokesperson.
Premier-designate Cho, who spoke at the event, highlighted Cheng’s understanding of Lai Ching-te's national policies given her central role in its formulation. She will be a key figure in gathering partners in the academic and professional fields to formulate long-term strategies for the country's welfare.
On economic policies, Cho stressed Kung's financial expertise which will be instrumental in crafting policies aligned with public needs. During his time as NDC Minister, Kung has led the 5+2 innovative industries plan focused on the development of green energy technology and circular economy, and other major programs for investing in Taiwan.
Cho also commended Chen's performance during the election and underscored his familiarity with local affairs and legislative processes given his experience as a former Taichung City councilor.
Cho stated that he will draw on the expertise of the incoming vice premier, secretary-general and spokesperson to not only lead the active and innovative Cabinet, but also build a peaceful and prosperous new Taiwan.
