The Tourism Administration has introduced a special offer for Japanese nationals obtaining new passports to attract Japanese tourists to Taiwan. These travelers will be eligible for a ¥5,000 (US$32) discount on round-trip tickets on selected airlines, with only 4,000 seats available on a lottery basis.

According to statistics from the Tourism Administration, Taiwan welcomed 6.4 million visitors last year, with Hong Kong, Macau, Japan, and South Korea being the top source countries. However, the number of Japanese visitors to Taiwan last year was only 940,000, less than half of the pre-COVID-19 pandemic figures.

Given the relatively low passport ownership rate among the Japanese population, the administration has devised this initiative exclusively for Japanese nationals who applied for or renewed their passports between March 25 and June 15 of this year. The discount voucher applies to flights with China Airlines, EVA Air, Tigerair Taiwan, and Starlux Airlines traveling to Taiwan from July 1 until the end of the year.
