The Lithuanian Foreign Ministry has pledged 50,000 euros to assist Taiwan’s Hualien earthquake reconstruction work. In a press release, Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis stated that Lithuania’s donation shows the spirit of unity between Lithuania and the people of Taiwan.
Taiwan’s Foreign Ministry sincerely thanked Landsbergis and Lithuania for generously donating to assist in Hualien's earthquake reconstruction. It pointed out that political figures such as Landsbergis and Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania Speaker Viktorija Čmilytė-Nielsen immediately expressed their concern and willingness to assist after the disaster.
The Foreign Ministry said that when announcing the donation, Landsbergis stated that Taiwan has promoted cooperation in many fields in recent years and also contributed to the Lithuanian aid of Ukraine. It emphasized that Taiwan and Lithuania are like-minded, solid allies who will continue working together to uphold democratic values in the international community.
A 7.2 magnitude earthquake struck the Hualien area on April 3, the largest since 1999. As of the time of reporting, 17 people have died, with 1,155 injured, 37 homeless, and 2 people still missing.
