A Chinese man who drove a speedboat near the Tamsui River in June has been indicted for entering Taiwan illegally. On Wednesday, Taipei’s Shilin District Prosecutors Office announced that the charges of the Chinese national, surnamed Ruan (阮), relate to immigration law violations, not military or national security issues.
According to the Shilin District Prosecutors Office, Ruan is charged with violating Taiwan’s regulations on entry and exit, specifically for entering Taiwan without the necessary authorization from relevant authorities. Ruan had been detained by the National Immigration Agency, but with the maximum detention period nearing its end, the case was transferred to Shilin District Court for further proceedings on Wednesday morning.
The case began when Ruan, reportedly facing investigations by Chinese authorities due to online comments, departed from China’s Fujian Province on the night of June 8. He entered Taiwan’s Tamsui River by speedboat the following morning, arriving at a ferry terminal, and surrendering himself. He was subsequently arrested and taken into custody by Taiwan's Coast Guard.
