The Presidential Office has announced that Taiwania Capital Chairman and senior advisor to the president Lin Hsin-i (林信義) will represent Taiwan at the 2024 APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting (AELM) on Monday. The meeting is scheduled to take place in Lima, Peru, from November 15 to 16. Scholars have expressed positive views regarding his appointment.
Lin has held senior management positions at several companies and served in key government roles, including Vice Premier, Economic Minister, and Chairman of the Industrial Technology Research Institute. He is well-versed in economic policy-making and execution and has attended APEC three times, including as a representative in 2005.
Director of the Taiwan ASEAN Studies Center at the Chung-Hua Institution for Economic Research (CIER) Kristy Hsu (徐遵慈) noted that the current situation differs significantly from when Lin attended APEC meetings in the early 2000s. Hsu emphasized that the intensity of global conflicts has increased, necessitating careful management. However, she expressed confidence in Lin's ability to adapt to these challenges based on his past experiences.
Hsu noted that recent global developments are primarily focused on net-zero emissions, new energy policies, economic resilience, and artificial intelligence (AI) technology, which are also key areas emphasized by the current Lai administration. She highlighted Taiwan's significant global role in these fields and indicated that these issues will be addressed in the upcoming meeting.
Hsu pointed out that Taiwan's semiconductor industry has garnered international attention and expects other nations to propose cooperation in this area. She advised Lin to prepare thoroughly on this topic before departing.
