Weather bureau monitoring Typhoon Noul
Wave Warning

The Central Weather Bureau (CWB) said on Saturday that it may issue a sea warning for Typhoon Noul Sunday morning. That would be the first such alert for Taiwan so far this year. But the bureau said that a land warning may not be necessary for Taiwan.

As of noon on Saturday, the typhoon was centered 1,060 kilometers southeast of Taiwan's southernmost tip, moving in a northwest direction at 18 km per hour.

The storm was packing maximum sustained winds of 162 kph, with gusts of up to 198 kph.

The bureau is predicting that the typhoon will continue to move across the northern Philippines overnight. But instead of moving westward toward Taiwan, forecasters are predicting that the typhoon will make a sharp turn to the north, sweeping past Taiwan's east coast.
