Taiwan’s representative office in Germany held an academic conference on Tuesday evening local time. Topics included the state of Taiwan and developments in cross-strait relations.

Dr. Sven Bernhard Gareis of the George C. Marshall European Center for Security, former head of Germany’s representative office to Taiwan Ulrich Dreesen, and reporter for German daily Tagesspiegel, Bjoern Rosen, were all invited to share their views on cross-strait relations and Taiwan’s democratization.

Dr. Gareis, who has also served as a visiting professor at Tamkang University in Taipei, shared his views with Taiwan’s Central News Agency after the event. He said that he believes both Taiwan and Mainland China have built a strong foundation for mutual exchanges. At the same time, he also said that Taiwan’s government should be more transparent and listen to public opinion in conducting relations with Mainland China.
