On this day in 1776, Rhode Island became the first colony to declare independence from Great Britain.

On this day in 1904, Charles Rolls and Henry Royce signed an agreement to collaborate in the production of Rolls-Royce cars.

Also on this day in 1904, construction began on the Panama Canal.

On this day in 1919, the May Fourth Movement began out of student demonstrations in Beijing. The students were protesting to the government’s weak response to the Treaty of Versailles, in particular the part which gave Japan territories in China which Germany had surrendered.

And on this day in 1929, actress Audrey Hepburn was born in Belgium. She is known for films such as “Roman Holiday,” “War and Peace,” “Funny Face,” and “Wait Until Dark.”
