Taiwan is reiterating its claim over the disputed Paracel Islands in the South China Sea. It also expresses concerns over escalating tensions between Vietnam and China over a large Chinese oil rig in the area.
Taiwan’s foreign ministry made the comments in a press release issued late on Friday. Tensions in the South China Sea have escalated to the point that as many as dozens of Chinese and Vietnamese ships have come into confrontation, sparking worries that a larger conflict could be brewing.
The foreign ministry said that “from the perspectives of history, geography, and international law”, the Republic of China on Taiwan has sovereignty over the Paracels and its waters.
The ministry also called on all sides to shelve disputes and jointly explore the region’s resources. It said countries bordering the disputed region should respect the principles and spirit of international laws and refrain from adopting unilateral measures that might upset the peace and stability of the region.
