The first Taiwan International Boat Show was set to conclude in Kaohsiung, southern Taiwan, on Sunday. Organizers said they were expecting the show to generate about NT$4.2 billion (US$139.3) in sales.

The Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA) is one of the main organizations behind the show. TAITRA’s vice president, Walter Yeh, said that 32 yachts and boats, worth about a billion Taiwan dollars have been sold since the show opened on May 8. He said buyers are expected to order another 30 yachts.

So far, the show has seen 45,000 domestic visitors and more than 2,000 overseas buyers, from China, the United States, Japan, Hong Kong and Singapore.

Yeh said there is tremendous potential for growth in Taiwan’s yacht market, because there are only about 100 registered yachts here, as compared to a million in Australia, which has roughly the same population as Taiwan.
