Heavily guarded Palace Museum treasures depart for Japan
Delicious treasures

Some of the most precious treasures of the National Palace Museum in Taipei are making their way to Japan.

The crates of treasures were escorted by the police all the way to the airport on Wednesday. The over 200 sets of precious works are set to be exhibited at the Tokyo National Museum and then at the Kyushu National Museum later this year. This is the first time National Palace Museum treasures will be displayed in an Asian country outside of Taiwan.

Director of the National Palace Museum, Fung Ming-chu, said First Lady Chow Mei-ching will act as the honorary head of the museum delegation to Japan.

The National Palace Museum’s most valuable treasures, the Jadeite Cabbage with Insects and the Meat-shaped Stone, are being exhibited abroad for the first time. They will be on display for two weeks at the Tokyo National Museum and the Kyushu National Museum, respectively.

The National Palace Museum said together with the treasures, it was also sending nearly 1,000 of the most popular museum gift shop items to Japan.

In addition, Silk Palace, a restaurant in the National Palace Museum, will cooperate with hotels in Japan to re-create dishes in the form of the renowned Jadeite Cabbage and the Meat-shaped Stone.
