April 10th this year marks the 40th Anniversary of the Taiwan Relations Act. The Taiwan Relations Act was signed into law on April 10, 1979 by the US Congress serving as an important foundation for the relations between Taiwan and the US. The act was passed a few months after the US switched diplomatic recognition from Taipei to Beijing.

Prof.Edward I-hsin Chen, a distinguished chair professor of political science department at Chinese Culture University said originally the act was called "Taiwan Enabling Act" proposed by President Jimmy Carter but the US Congress thought it was insufficient to cover Taiwan security and arms sales and initiated new and improved "Taiwan Relations Act" which was approved on April 10, 1979.
