The Hakka people came at various times over the centuries to Taiwan from the Chinese mainland. During the centuries of wandering throughout mainland China, they absorbed the folk music of each region and it became a distinctive type of music known as the Hakka Eight Tones. This type of music was brought to Taiwan during the fourth Hakka migration between 1645 and 1867.
