"Campus music," or sometimes known as "campus folksongs," refers to music that was mostly written and composed by college students during the 1970s and 1980s. Before the 1970s, Western pop music won the hearts and minds of young people in Taiwan. But a trip to China by then US President Richard Nixon in 1972, followed by Washington’s severing diplomatic relations with Taiwan in 1978, angered Taiwanese youths and raised their awareness of cultural identity. We should we have own music,”they said. The slogan "sing our own songs" summed up the mood at that time.
