This week's first part of Jade Bells and Bamboo Pipes features a symphonic poem for Pipa solo Ambush on All Sides, a masterpiece in Chinese classical music describing the story of General Xiang Yu (Hegemon-King of Western Chu) in 202 BCE being defeated by Liu Bang, the first emperor of Han Dynasty (202-195 BCE). In the second part, you will hear some famous folk songs with the conductor Henry Shek and the Gunma Symphony Orchestra. The Gunma Symphony Orchestra in Japan was founded in 1945 and has a history of more than 70 years.
