Dharma Master Cheng Yen was born in Taichung, Taiwan. She founded the Buddhist Compassion Relief Tzu Chi Foundation in 1966 in Hualien, eastern Taiwan in 1966. Tzu Chi has then provided international humanitarian aid ever since and has become the first NGO in Taiwan to attain association status with the UN Department of Information in 2003.
