Taipei Mayor Ko Wen-je is calling for changes in the athletes’ village which is being built for the 2017 Universiade. The games, which are the world’s largest sporting event for college athletes, will be held in Taipei.

Although the athlete’s village has a price tag of NT$2.6 billion (US$81.4 million), not all of the structures are permanent.

Ko raised concerns about the future of the athlete’s cafeteria in particular, which will be torn down following the 12-day event. He said that it was a waste, and called for meetings between the Taipei and New Taipei governments to discuss the possibility of turning over the athletes’ village to an independent operator following the games.
