European court dismisses case about accepting Taiwanese nationality
European Court of Human Rights has rejected Taiwanese students' demands for their own nationality

The European Court of Human Rights has dismissed a case challenging Norway's policy of designating Taiwanese students as Chinese nationals. A group of Taiwanese students in Norway had sued the country for calling them Chinese on their alien residence permits.

The court has found that Norway has not violated the students' rights or freedoms.

This decision is a setback after more than three years of work. In mid-2018, Taiwanese exchange students raised over NT$3,000,000 to hire a lawyer to bring this case to the Oslo local courts. The case then went up to Norway's High Court and even the county's Supreme Court, but it was dismissed without a hearing.

Despite the court's dismissal, the students' lawyer still has hope for an appeal. The students still have around NT$1.4 million left in funding, and they say they now plan to bring their case to the UN.
