Days after a Taiwanese TV channel mistakenly broadcast news of invasion by China, two senior station executives have offered to resign. In a statement on Friday, the station CTS said that it was “deeply sorry” for the mistake and that acting general manager Chen Ya-lin would offer to quit her job. The head of Taiwan’s public news broadcasting group, Tchen Yu-chiou, said she would do the same.
On Wednesday, viewers of CTS’ morning news program woke up to see a message on the news ticker falsely proclaiming that China was bombing New Taipei City. CTS says the messages were meant to be used in a video on disaster prevention, and they appeared on screen due to a technical error.
Culture Minister Lee Yung-te says he respects the two senior executives’ decision to resign. He says it is up to CTS’ board of directors to decide whether to accept the resignations. Lee says a full investigation is underway to make sure similar mistakes never happen again.
