Taiwan has joined the United States and more than 50 other countries in signing a Declaration for the Future of the Internet. The US-led initiative aims to defend human rights and reinforce democracy by ensuring everyone can access an internet that is free, open and secure.

Digital Minister Audrey Tang represented Taiwan at the virtual signing event. On Friday, Tang wrote on Facebook that the global pandemic has shown the world that it has to defend free speech, strengthen democracy and work towards digital resilience. For that, Tang says, the world needs an open, reliable and safe internet.

In recent years, Taiwan has garnered global attention for its approach to fighting fake news and promoting digital democracy. Late last year, the European Parliament’s committee on disinformation went on a fact-finding mission to Taiwan to learn from its experience.
