Foreign Minister Joseph Wu (吳釗燮) said on Monday that he expects U.S. President Joe Biden will voice support for Taiwan during his upcoming meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping (習近平). Wu made the comments during an interview outside the Legislature.

The meeting between Biden and Xi will occur on the 15th on the sidelines of the APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting in San Francisco. Wu says that in any official meeting between China and the United States, the issue of Taiwan is bound to be discussed. Wu says that he is confident the U.S. will demonstrate support for Taiwan in such conversations.

Wu was asked about rumors that Taiwan’s representative to the U.S. Hsiao Bi-khim (蕭美琴) will soon return to Taiwan to run as vice president for the DPP alongside current Vice President Lai Ching-te (賴清德). Wu says that it is not the Foreign Ministry’s place to comment on the election and that Hsiao is still working hard in her diplomatic position. He adds that diplomatic staff frequently change, and if Hsiao were to move to another role, it would not negatively impact U.S.-Taiwan relations.
