Mother’s Day is May 12 this year, and the Agriculture Ministry Agency of Rural Development and Soil and Water Conservation (ARDSWC) is concurrently designating May as the annual “Soil and Water Conservation Month” to mobilize the public in joining the ranks of citizens protecting the common mother: Mother Earth.

The ARDSWC announced the start of the month-long observance this Friday, sharing this year’s theme of “resilient rural communities and sustainable soil and water conservation.” Nearly 40 large-scale activities across Taiwan are being held in conjunction with the event including tours, concerts, and carnivals. ARDSWC Director Lee Chen-yang (李鎮洋) invites the public to get involved in rural water conservation issues by gaining an understanding of rural development and practicing sustainable water use in an educational yet entertaining way.

Lee aims for a future in which we use technology to more effectively monitor water and soil resources, formulate more appropriate disaster prevention measures, and continue to support rural areas through sustainable water use.

Agriculture Ministry Undersecretary Chen Tien-shou (陳添壽) spoke at the commencement, saying that if the ARDSWC succeeds in its endeavors, the public can feel at ease, live more comfortably, and both lives and property will be safer.
